Bat Mitzvah means daughter of the commandments. This happens automatically when a young lady turns 12 (for boys 13). This is when Shayna
officially becomes responsible for upholding the laws related
to Judaism.
Shayna will participate in a service on Saturday morning.
She will recite several prayers and share many of the things
that she has learned over the years. Shayna has spent
hundreds of hours in preparation for this day dating back to
Kindergarten. Many think that this is the culmination, or end
of her studies. However, this is actually the beginning. The
difference is, from this point on, it is her responsibility.
Our services start at 10am and go until about 12:30. That is a LONG service! Don't worry, most people do not arrive until somewhere between 10:30 and 11. Shayna will begin leading the service close to 11. The next question that you may ask is "What do I wear?" People will be dressed in a variety of different clothes (would look pretty funny if we were all dressed alike, especially if I (Jason) had to wear a dress). Women will wear anything from nice slacks, to skirts, to dresses. Men will wear khakis and polo shirts, to shirt and ties, to full suits (that's what I will be wearing). Basically, anything that you would wear to church is fine for the service.
Our Temple policy is that all men wear a yarmulke (head covering) regardless of your religion. We will have them at Temple for you. Women are welcome to wear them as well, but it is not an obligation. Some people will also being wearing a prayer shawl called a tallit; this is reserved for those that are Jewish. We ask that everyone please refrain from using cellphones while in the building on Saturday morning as it is against Jewish tradition. Much of our service is done in Hebrew but all of our prayers are translated into English as well (don't worry....most of us that are saying the prayers do not actually know what they mean either). Our Temple is a welcoming laid back congregation; if you have a question, don't hesitate to ask someone and they will gladly help you out.
